Medicare / Part D
Prescription drug coverage that matches your medications
Medicare Part D is standalone prescription drug coverage sold by private insurers approved by Medicare. Every plan has its own formulary, tiers, and preferred pharmacies, so the lowest premium on paper is not always the lowest total cost for your medications.
What we compare
- Whether each drug is on the formulary.
- The tier your drug falls into and any restrictions like prior authorization or step therapy.
- Preferred vs. standard pharmacy pricing near you.
- Monthly premium plus expected annual drug spend.
Avoiding the late-enrollment penalty
If you go 63 or more days without creditable drug coverage after first becoming eligible, you may owe a Part D late-enrollment penalty. Even if you do not take prescriptions now, enrolling in a low-premium plan can help protect you from that penalty later.
Part D or Advantage?
Most Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverage. Standalone Part D is typically paired with Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or Original Medicare.
